Medicaid providers now able to submit claims online
ODJFS is pleased to announce that effective July 1, Medicaid providers can now submit service claims for payment via a new Internet “web portal”, one of the first deliverables of
the new Medicaid Information Technology System (MITS). When fully implemented, MITS will provide a single gateway to Ohio
Medicaid information and business processes, providing a self service for customers and stakeholders.

This new interface will reduce the volume of paper claims. This project is targeted at small volume providers (25 or fewer claims
per day) who complete and mail their claims on paper to a state data entry contractor.

Examples of Medicaid provider types who will benefit from this project include: physician practices, transportation providers, home health services providers, rural health clinics, businesses selling durable medical equipment, and independent providers
serving Medicaid waiver consumers. This project has been pilot tested over the past six months with a few volunteer providers in order to ensure its success upon full implementation. With this memo, ODJFS will begin communicating with providers through a variety of means including newsletters, professional and trade
associations, and the existing Medicaid provider page on the ODJFS Web site about this new enhancement.

Medicaid providers have requested a web based claims submission capability for many years in order to move away from paper
claims submissions because they are cumbersome, costly, and have an inherent risk of data entry error. By the close of SFY 2008, about 3 million paper claims will have been submitted and processed. ODJFS contracts with a vendor to convert paper claims via data entry into electronic submissions. The estimated cost for SFY 2008 will be about $3 million. Reducing the volume and cost of Medicaid claims submitted on paper is only one benefit of the new Ohio Medicaid Claims Submission Web Portal. Additional benefits include:
· A reduction in state’s cost to transport,
retrieve, and store paper claims.
· A reduction in data entry errors, also
reducing the need for claims to be
resubmitted and reentered to correct data
entry errors.
